Rewriting a Tale

We are trying to change a story from 3rd person / narrator to 1st person. We had to:

  • Pick a fairy tale we know so we can rewrite it.
  • Brainstorm a fairytale from another characters point of view. I choose to do mine from Hansel’s view.
  • Add words to describe my character Hansel – oldest, brave, gets lost, aware of step mother’s feeling.
  • Add the pronouns I need to use for 1st person perspective – I, we, me, my, our.
  • Check we have the main events from the story and number in order to remind me to use paragraphs.
  • Then we had to write the open paragraph.

Here is my first paragraph:

Gretal and I woke up to fighting. They were at it again, Dad and our new Step Mother were arguing about food and how she thought we all wouldn’t survive. I remembered times when Mum was alive and she would go without so Gretal and I would have enough to eat. I’m sure that was why she got so sick she died, but I couldn’t tell Gretal that.

I found this easy once I put myself in the position of my character.

Character Profiles

We have been investigating Characters I  the books we read. we started by listening to Mrs Mundy Read a book by Tim Shoemaker and had to record what the main characters were like. We talked about the Protagonist and Antagonist.

Then we investigated what we know about different characters we know from the TV. We looked at a couple of clips of Popeye before we completed a character Profile, which is really useful for knowing about our characters before we write, and to see how they have developed during reading a novel.

Information Reports

WALT write information reports using headings, questions to direct our research and paragraphs. Here is an example about Matariki

We also looked at NZ History here is one of the investigations.

Mood Writing

WALHT create mood in a piece of writing using a writing frame. Our teacher showed a picture and we had to choose a feeling/emotion to go with the image. We were allowed to use our imagination to change the image into a possible disasterous situation. E.g. the Queenstown luge, thrilling exhilerating, anxious, nervous…

Words we needed were place, adverb, verb, colour, sound, smell, touch, time of day and the weather. These words were added to a writing frame, then we created a piece of music to add to the mood while we read the story aloud. Here is an example…

Identifying Parts of Speech

We are looking at what nouns, adjective, verbs and adverbs are and how they are used to create mood in a story. Sometimes they are in a phrase but this week we are looking for particiular words.

Here is what we learnt about the nouns in a story called Humilation. It is a story about some boys who played soccer and had to have a team looking of their backs to make sure others didn’t sneak up on them and dro their shorts.

Thank you Malia for sharing your nouns with us.

About Me

We are learning about having a smart fooprint. This includes knowing what information to share online, things people should not share includes, your full name, address, phone number, studnet Id number, bank account number, passwords and date of birth. As people can use this information to steal your id.

ANZAC – Haiku

We have been looking at ANZAC, we were asked to write a Haiku poem, that is a poem with  5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second line and 5 in the last line. That is correct a Haiku poem has only 3 lines.

Here is one I made…

Thinking of words to fit was tricky, have you ever tried writing a Haiku?

Show not Tell

We are learning how to make our stories more interesting by showing the audience what we see, hear, feel rather than telling them someone is scared or worried or that a tornado hit the beach and moved up the street. We were attempting to put ourselves in a natural disaster. Here are some of our examples…

Can you think of others?
